The Beatles · 1968
Origins
Paul McCartney wrote it in 1968 to comfort Julian, John Lennon's five-year-old son, while his parents were separating. It began as Hey Jules; he changed the name because Jude sounded better.
Context
It was the Beatles' first release on their own label, Apple Records. At just over seven minutes, with a refrain of about four minutes at the end, it still spent nine weeks at number one in the US.
